Round 2: Middle Park FC 1-1 Elwood City SC
Venue: JL Murphy Reserve
A tense, tactical battle at JL Murphy Reserve ended with the points shared as both sides traded goals in - excuse the cliché - a real game of two halves. While the visitors controlled the early encounters, a spirited fightback from the hosts ensured a dramatic finish to this closely contested match on a moist pitch in the rain.
First Half: A Midfield Stalemate
The match began with high energy as Middle Park FC (MPFC) looked to establish dominance with strong passing sequences through the middle. An early scare for Elwood came in just the 3rd minute when a teasing cross from the right forced the keeper into a desperate tip-away. MPFC continued to press, with two consecutive corners nearly curling directly into the net.
Elwood weathered the early storm and had a penalty shout waved away in the 5th minute. As the half progressed, the game settled into a gritty midfield battle. Both sides struggled for consistent rhythm; Elwood looked dangerous through "pinball" scrambles in the box, while MPFC’s best chance fell to Rodriguez (9), whose snapshot from the edge of the area lacked the power to beat the keeper.
The half-time whistle blew at 0-0, with both teams still very much "feeling each other out" in a cagey affair.
Second Half: Deadlock Broken
Elwood emerged for the second period with renewed intent, immediately testing the MPFC backline with balls over the top, keeping Slowey (1) on his toes. Their persistence paid off in the 53rd minute. A lucky bounce favored an Elwood striker, who showed composure to round the MPFC keeper and slot the ball into the top of the net.
Buoyed by the lead, the visitors began to dictate play, forcing Slowey into another stinging save from distance. Sensing the game slipping away, MPFC’s frustration boiled over with a yellow card for Fetiveau (10), but the caution seemed to act as a wake-up call for the home side.
The Fightback
The final 30 minutes saw a shift in momentum. MPFC began to stretch the Elwood defense, moving the ball across the park with purpose and the midfield began to dictate terms. The pressure mounted as a whipped free kick resulted in a powerful header that the Elwood keeper did brilliantly to smother on the line.
In the 78th minute, MPFC’s persistence finally paid off. A long, diagonal ball was flicked on into the path of McNulty (16), who managed to get a clinical toe to the ball, lifting it over the keeper to make it 1-1.
Late Drama
The closing stages were frantic. Elwood nearly snatched a late winner when a flicked header rattled the post in the 87th minute. At the other end, the winger (12) stepping up in the late stages - cut inside after a mazy run but couldn't keep his strike below the bar.
Ultimately, a draw was a fair reflection of a game where Elwood struck early and Middle Park rallied late to ensure the points were shared.
